Review: Priestess of the White (Age of t...

priestess of the white.jpg

This is a fantasy story about a girl Auraya who lives in Northern Ithania and she has the talent of magic since she was young. The Circlians are order who believe in Five Gods, and that is why it is called the Age of the Five. They currently dominate Northern Ithania after winning the War of the Gods, and so they are in a peaceful age. She was taught magic when she was young by a Dreamweaver named Leiard. These Dreamweavers are considered heathens by the Circlians since they do not believe in any god, and they have their own ways, they are peaceful yet despised by the Circlians. Auraya has to handle this situation with care since she has been chosen as one of the White, one of the five that lead the Circlians, and she is gifted by the Gods with more powers and she revered by Circlians and Northern Ithanians. With this she also faces one of the strongest foes the Circlians have faced yet the Pentaderians. This book by Trudi Caravan brings your imagination to mind and you keep thinking of all the magic taking place. There is more going on then it seems and even with all the events you still don’t know all that is going on. There are different characters with events taking place that all come into play at a certain point, and this book pulls you in so that you want to know whats going to happen next who is going to win. What happens to Auraya and other threats do they face. This is a very well written story, and Trudi Caravan has done very well with developing the characters for the first book of this trilogy.

The Making of Star Wars by J.W. Rinzler...

makingofstarwars.jpg

If your a Star Wars fan this is the definitive book written by Rinzler. It interviews all the people the struggled to make this movie at the time when people didn’t think it would succeed or become what it has over the past 30 years, turning into one of the biggest pop-culture phenomenons of the 20th/21st century. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book, I have been a scienfiction fan all my life and seeing this movie when I was young may have influenced me into loving science fiction so getting this book is a must for a Star Wars fans.

I forgot about this order from a little while ago since I ordered the book from an independent party. I wanted to get the Ubuntu Linux Bible since it had so many reviews from technical and non-technical people, its more for personal use of Ubuntu the server level use. This comes with the Ubuntu CD and all the necessary steps to take care of the install and any issues you run into. I usually do installs of this kind from details on forums and online information, but I usually like having references and this is a really good reference book.

The PC I want to install it on is the media PC which I haven’t been using much. it will be a dual boot, but I’m also thinking of installing Vista Ultimate and I think I have to install it first. This is just a nifty project to work on because I will testing both systems for myself. I know that Ubuntu is good and I’m looking forward to using it, but with Vista its a matter of seeing it screw up at a certain point.

Review: The Black Magician Trilogy...

cvr-1-uk.jpgcvr-2-uk.jpg

cvr-3-uk.jpg

By Trudi Canavan

  • The Magicians’ Guild (Book One)
  • The Novice (Book Two)
  • The Highlord (Book Three)

The Guild of Magicians is regarded very highly and usually only the nobility from different areas are able to send their children their to develop their talents. They rarely take people from the common folk because it is rare they have any magical powers which makes a difference, until this one girl, Sonea, caused them a ruckus and managed to break one of the magicians barriers without any formal training. So the story starts from there and it gets really interesting since you see both sides of the story and you get to see the underlying story of the Magicians’ Guild. I really like how Canavan made the setting so that you can’t tell what time period it is in, its as if its a modern time but architecture and engineering is fused with magic so it has a different type of development and your not sure what type of technology they may have. Also you really get a feeling for the characters but you feel there is more to them so you keep on reading. Then you feel there is mystery to the people in the Guild and to something happening in the background, you are kept on your toes and when magical battles take place you are imagining every moment. I read these books in the summer of 2005 but I was happy I read them then because I couldn’t put the books down and I was happy I had all three books, it would have been torture to be waiting for each book to be published, there would be nights I would read for 6 hours and just keep on going thinking I could sleep later. If you like fantasy then this is the type of book that you would really enjoy and the story is fresh and it keeps you wanting more, the ending is great and I became of the other because this was her first publication and I’m happy I found it.

Review: The Curious Incident of the Dog ...

Haddon.jpg

I got this book as a recommendation from Max Barry since I enjoy his tastes in books. This is the story of an autistic boy named Christopher Boone who is trying to discover who killed the dog, and he tries to figure out prime numbers and multiples of two to calm down. He goes through this world as if it is a shock to his senses. This is a smartly funny and very heart felt story about the young man and living his life. You want to see how he goes about doing things we take for granted, and how difficult it is for an autistic person to understand emotion so he finds it easy to understand animals and numbers since they are logical. Your heart goes out to the young man and his family and you really are viewing things from his point of view. This book has broadened my outlook and my hat goes off to the other for making such as simple story so reviting by giving it from the point of view from this young man, and what his family goes through is what many go through but also they are very understanding towards him. This isn’t a book you pick up everyday, but worth a read because you really do feel you were touched as well as learning something new. It’s an easy story to read but it will have a lastin affect.

Moleskine Journals...

moleskine1.jpg

I first discovered this little note book in Waterstones about 5 years ago, and I love these notepads. There are two sizes, and they come as normal pads, dayplanners, calendars, city guides, and different ways of opening them. And these come blank, lined, and squared. A great feature of all the notebooks is a little pouch in the back which I usually use to store cards in.

Every meeting I go to I always write down what was mentioned and if their were any dates or specific things I have to remember to go back to. And even if I have ideas or things I want to do I write them down in this little book that I carry with me. I have found a few people that carry this and its always interesting to see what they write in it, and I know for a fact that they love these little books because they can do so much with them and are made of very high quality. If ever you wanted a notepad or notebook to jot down ideas and even sketching then I really recommend these treasures of creativness!

Wallpaper City Guides...

These are some very interesting guides from Wallpaper which are available as set for $180. I really think that they are very useful and probably have a lot of information. I really like the colors of the book since it really doesn’t look like a guide!

Books I picked up...

sogo.jpg

These are just the books that I thought I had to have and wouldn’t be to heavy to carry with me! I really wanted a few interior design books, but those are just heavy as hell! There is no way in hell I could carry the heavy books with me! And there were the odd books that I would have wanted to pick up just to take a quick read through them, but I didn’t get a chance since I didn’t think they were essential.

  • The Bad Place (Dean Koontz)
  • The Black Sun (James Twining)
  • Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow – Troy Trilogy (David A. Gemmell)
  • Priestess of the White (Trudi Canavan)
  • Last of the Wilds (Trudi Canavan)
Hatchards London...

hatchards.jpg

This is one of London’s must see book shops! It has this old classic feel to the bookshop! I have been to it a few times before, and its always fun being in here! If ever you wanted to know how Harry Potter felt in a bookstore then this would be it. When ever I’m reading a few excerpts from a book, I can hear the creak and crack of people walking up and down the flight of stairs. This is the best spot to find signed versions of books, and a different flavor of books! What I like is that they really do have a different recommended books section so I can take a look at what other good books are available. There is a smell of old paper as if they have magic books hidden in between all these books or at least that what I like to think. You are literally surrounded by books that it takes some good maneuvering skills to get from one end to the other and around the books. What I especially like is the personal service and personal feel you get from this bookstore, you can tell those who are working their really love to work there and I can’t blame them.

Waterstones Piccadilly...

DSC01423.jpg

This is probably my favorite bookstore in the world! There might be ones which are a little bit bigger or with more books, but I have a personel attachment to this bookstores and I have spent hours upon hours in this bookstore over the years. It is 5 floors of books, books, and more books! You can always find something to read or something new and interesting! I never thought that I would like one speicific Genre or another, but I was surprised as to what I liked from the selection of recommended books! I have even bought kid books because I liked the story so much and not finding out it was kids books until later! I didn’t even care, I was really happy that I was entertained by the book and I bought the rest of the trilogy. I have a few authors that I keep buying their books like Dean Koontz, Trudi Canavan, Dan Simmons, Max Barry, and Joshua Mowll. There other authors that I check up on every once in a while, but I always am open to a good story. When I’m walking around looking at the shelves I always feel like I could find a gem of a book in between all these shelves and once I find it, it is the best feeling in the world! You just keep reading that book, not wanting to go to sleep or the story to finish! I find it frustrating when I finish a good book because its hard to replace! Maybe Im jumping into this too much, but its something to experience! They also have my favorite notepads here which is the Moleskine notepads, they are the best ot right in and I always have one with me in a meeting or carrying it under the seat of my bike. There is something for everyone in this bookstore, I could spend days in there because there are couchs available on the other floors! Just as long as nobody has taken them!
